Gynaecological Ultrasound
Gynaecological ultrasound is a medical imaging technique used to visualise the female reproductive system. The procedure is non-invasive and painless, and can provide valuable information about the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs. Gynaecological ultrasound is often used to diagnose conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis, as well as to monitor the development of the embryo during early phases of pregnancy.
At Cyprus Advanced Gynaecological Surgery, gynaecological ultrasound is performed using state-of-the-art equipment. Dr. Georgiou and Dr. Tranoulis are UK-trained and experienced Gynaecological Consultants, with sub-specialisation in Gynaecological Ultrasound.
Gynaecological Ultrasound for Pelvic Pain
Ultrasound is commonly used for the evaluation and management of pelvic pain, which is pain that is felt in the lower abdomen, pelvis, and lower back. It is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that can help detect and diagnose various pelvic organ pathologies that may be contributing to pelvic pain. The test can detect a wide range of conditions that can cause pelvic pain, including:
-
Ovarian cysts
-
Uterine fibroids
-
Endometriosis
-
Adhesions
-
Ectopic pregnancy
-
Pelvic inflammatory disease
-
Ovarian torsion
-
Bladder problems
Gynaecological Ultrasound for Endometriosis
Ultrasound is a valuable tool for the diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus.
One of the benefits of ultrasound in the diagnosis of endometriosis is that it can identify small lesions and cysts that may not be palpable during a physical examination. Additionally, ultrasound can also help assess the extent of the disease and the involvement of the surrounding organs.
It is also useful in monitoring the response to treatment and detecting recurrence. Additionally, transvaginal ultrasound is especially beneficial as it provides better visualisation of the endometrial implants, especially those located in the deeper endometrial layers and also in small lesions.
Gynaecological Ultrasound for Heavy Periods
Ultrasound is a highly effective tool for the diagnosis of heavy or irregular periods, a condition known as menorrhagia or Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)
Gynaecological ultrasound for menorrhagia can identify structural abnormalities such as fibroids or polyps, which may be causing the heavy bleeding. Additionally, ultrasound can also help assess the thickness of the endometrium and detect any abnormalities in the uterus such as adhesions or malformations.
Ultrasound can also be helpful in identifying the cause of heavy periods in cases of hormonal imbalances or bleeding disorders, as it can assess the ovaries, uterus and cervix to detect any causes of heavy periods. Transvaginal ultrasound is especially beneficial as it provides better visualisation of the uterus and ovaries, and can detect small fibroids or polyps that may be contributing to the heavy menstrual bleeding.
In cases AUB is experienced in the postmenopausal period, this is classified as a warning sign for genital tract malignancy and therefore, urgent pelvic ultrasound is warranted to ensure the pelvic organs and the lining of the uterine cavity in particular, are assessed adequately.
Gynaecological Ultrasound for Ovarian Cysts and Cancers
In the case of ovarian cysts and cancer, a gynaecological ultrasound can provide valuable information about the size, shape, and location of any cysts on the ovaries, as well as any abnormalities or signs of cancer.
Gynaecological Ultrasound for Fertility
In the case of infertility, a gynaecological ultrasound can provide valuable information about the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs, which can help to determine if there are any issues that may be impacting a woman's ability to conceive.
Expertise in Gynaecological Ultrasound
Dr. Georgiou is a UK-trained Sonologist (ultrasound specialist). She completed a sub-specialty fellowship training program in Gynaecological Ultrasound at King's Hospital under the tutorship of Miss Jackie Ross and was awarded a diploma in Advanced Gynaecological Ultrasound (PgCert Med USS) from London King's College. Dr. Georgiou is highly skilled at performing gynaecology and early pregnancy ultrasound. She specialises in the diagnosis and management of early pregnancy problems, fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. The skill to perform and interpret her own ultrasounds revolutionised her surgical practice.
Dr. Tranoulis is a UK-trained ultrasound specialist. He is highly skilled at performing gynaecological ultrasound to diagnose benign and malignant gynaecological conditions. His main interest is in improving the diagnostic accuracy of ovarian tumours as this has a positive effect on subsequent management.
